Segment 4: Types of Light
Did you know that the type of lighting in your house can have a great effect on how colors will look when painted on a wall? Here are 3 types of lighting and how they effect colors:
Direct Sunlight: Considered the ideal light source, natural sunlight maintains a neutral balance between the warm (yellow cast) and cool (blue cast) ends of the light spectrum. Northern light is the coolest, while light from a southern exposure is most intense. Direct sunlight provides the truest rendition of colors within a room.
Indirect Sunlight: Natural sunlight is not consistent, it changes throughout the day. from sunrise to sunset. The intense golden rays and subsequent distinct shadows of a sunny, late afternoon have a profound effect on the colors in a room.
Artificial Light: Colors in a room appear warn under incandescent and halogen lights, where reds and yellows are enhanced, and blues and greens are dulled. Under the cool cast of fluorescent lights, blues and greens are enhanced, while reds and yellows are muted.
LFP Tip: When choosing colors, you will want to consider the current lighting sources within your space to be painted.
